The Relocation of the
East Honolulu Police Station

State Senator Sam Slom The East Honolulu police station which was slated to be built on the location of the park and ride facility in Hawaii Kai is now going to be moved to the Fort Ruger Area in Kaimuki according to the latest proposal unveiled by Mayor Jeremy Harris last week. My commentary on this issue follows:

For more than 30 years, East Honolulu (Aina Haina to Hawaii Kai) residents have wanted-and needed- a police station; the only district not to have a facility. There were studies, panels and blue ribbon citizen task forces to prepare a proposal. Aina Haina gave way to Hawaii Kai because of the availability of land at the Park n' Ride location. The police chief was on board. The Mayor gave his support. Then last year, after the election of our Councilman Djou, who fought the overspending and over taxation of the Mayor, the police station became embroiled in petty politics.

The Mayor's continuing vendetta against Hawaii Kai ensued and included:

(1) his threat to close the satellite City Hall; (2) a $150,000 sign, damaged by poor city engineering; (3) the denial of usage of Koko Head neighborhood park for Pop Warner Dolphins football; (4) lapsing of the original $4.5 million in funds for the police station; (5) forced lane closures and tree plantings on Lunalilo Home Road against the wishes of the Neighborhood Board and majority of residents, as well as other incidents.

Then the police chief mysteriously withdrew his support of Hawaii Kai for the station. The Mayor selected Fort Ruger, a state property, available on a month-to-month lease without any citizen input announcing it in his State of the City speech. Concerned citizens and voters should ask why. The only good news is that the Mayor will be seeking other employment after November of this year; the bad news is he still has nearly 9 months of potential harm to the resident voters of East Oahu and Hawaii Kai.
