Legislature Goes for the "Dog"

BY SID McLAIN

Hoping to get the attention of Mexican Government officials, the Hawaii State Legislature is moving resolutions aimed at getting extradition proceedings for Bounty Hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman stopped. Chapman is an east Honolulu resident. State Senator Sam Slom is sponsoring a resolution which requests the President of Mexico and the second district court of Guadalajara to drop extradition charges against "Dog" Chapman. Hearings on the resolution have not been scheduled.

Chapman and his entourage including his wife and partner Beth Chapman testified March 7, on HCR50/HR29 before the House Committee on International Affairs. The non-binding resolution received resounding support by the committee and now goes to the House Judiciary Committee.

In June of 2003 the "Dog" traveled to Mexico and arrested Andrew Luster who jumped a $1 million bond and is now serving a 124 year sentence after being convicted of drugging and rapping 3 women. The Mexican government called the action illegal and charged Chapman with felony kidnapping and "deprivation of liberty" of Lester and returning him to the United States. Jailed in Mexico. Chapman is home on $300,000 bail with Mexico threatening to extradite him for trial.
