Governor Vetoes Stand at 32 as Bill Deadline Passes
Governor Linda Lingle returned 27 bills to the State Legislature without her approval by the July 11 bill action deadline date.
On June 26, the Governor released a list of 28 bills for potential vetoes. HB2595, relating to family visits for incarcerated persons, which was on the veto list, became law without the Governor's signature. The remaining 27 were vetoed.
House and Senate majorities felt a special session was not needed to override any of the Governor's vetoes, despite last minute lobbying by some labor unions.
The total number of bills vetoed for the 2006 legislative session totaled 32.The Governor signed or allowed to become law without her signature 318 bills of the 354 bills passed this session. Four of the bills passed this session call for constitutional amendments, which do not receive act numbers and cannot be vetoed.
While the Governor could have vetoed more bad bills that were passed out this session, I was happy to see some of the year's worst bills go down in flames.
