Hawaii Kai Town Meeting - July 12, 2006.
Unanimous Opposition to Resort Plan
A crowd of over 400 people came to a community meeting On July 12 to hear Mayor Mufi Hannemann and his cabinet talk about various issues including the proposed recreational resort being planned for an area near Sandy Beach and the golf course.
Overwhelming opposition by the community to the proposed resort which will consist of two recreation centers dotted with 180 800 sq. ft. "cabins" was voiced during an informal headcount that read "unanimous".
The developer proposes to build a recreation center that will consist of tennis courts, swimming pools and "180 large vacation cabins" on 181 acres of land. No formal plan has been filed with the city. The land is zoned for preservation, and the public sentiment which I agree with, is to keep it as "open space" so that future generations can enjoy the area.
